William T. Sharpe
November 10, 2013
William T. "Chief" Sharpe passed away November 10th at James Square.
Pop was born July 22, 1922 in Clearfield, PA to Vincent and Ruth Sharpe. He married the love of his life, the former Betty Mapstone in 1941.
He later served in the US Navy from 1943-1946 in the Second World War on the USS Salt Lake City.
In 1953, he moved his family to Syracuse where he was a tool and dye maker at GE and Crouse-Hinds before retiring in 1983 from Carrier where he was a maintenance supervisor.
Together, Betty and Bill had many happy years of camping with friends on the St. Lawrence River in Clayton, swimming in their backyard pool and enjoying their grandchildren and then great-grandchildren. Everyone who knew Pop loved him. He could tell stories like no other. Good Ole Pop was the one who started it all and if it wasn't for Pop, we wouldn't be here.
Bill was predeceased by his parents and by his son, Bill.
He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Betty; daughter Judy (Neal) Needham; son, Jim (Sharon) and daughter-in-law Mary Ellen Sharpe. His grandchildren will hold dear to their hearts memories of Pop, Mike (Kelly) Needham, Carol (Michael) Skanes, Bob (Laurie Dibello) Needham, Tom (Amy) Needham, Charles (Tracy) Sharpe, Adam (Jamie) Sharpe, and Billy Sharpe.
He left behind 8 great-grandchildren who have cherished every moment that they spent with Pop.
The family wishes to thank the nurses and aides at James Square who took such good care of our Pop. They knew how special he was.
A memorial service will be 10am on Thursday at New Comer Funeral Home, N. Syracuse. Burial will be at Pine Plains Cemetery, Clay.
Contributions may be made to American Cancer Society.
