A kind and gentle soul has passed into the presence of our Lord. Bill was born in the Bronx, New York on May 14, 1951. Shortly after, his family returned to Syracuse where Bill remained for most of his life apart from his time in the service. Bill, or Billy, as mom and other family members called him, came from a large family. He had two brothers, four sisters, and several cherished dogs. It was always hectic in our household, and Bill made it enjoyable and interesting.
Bill served in the Air Force during the Vietnam era and later in the Air Force reserves. He was extremely proud of his service to our country.
Bill was well read and well educated. He held three college degrees. He was very knowledgeable in many areas, but history was his favorite. Bill combined that knowledge with his passion for coins and stamps. He would cite the wherefores and whys for each issue and the economic conditions of various times.
Bill loved to share his knowledge and interesting things that he learned.
Bill was also a fisherman. He especially enjoyed fishing with his brother Al and his nephews. He also enjoyed his outings with his sisters.
Bill was always generous with his resources and time. He loved spending time with his nieces and nephews.
Bill lived with and helped our mother much of her life. It was endearing to watch them together. The care and love that they provided for each other was tremendous. Bill was with mom to the very end of her life.
Bill loved conversation. He would make efforts to talk to all of us as much as possible. He would gleefully try to include his favorite animal, bears, in any conversation. Even though it might drive the listener up a wall, especially his big brother.
Bill brightened any room he was in by telling jokes and doing impressions. He delighted in making people laugh. He did so until the last days of his life. Hospital staff quickly came to enjoy Bill's presence. He truly enjoyed getting laughs from the people who took care of him.
We shall all remember Bill for his laughter and how he gently and lovingly walked through life.
Bill is survived by his brothers Robert Richway and Albert Richway; sisters, Jeanne Carter, Kathy (Pete) Carter, and Laura Richway; as well as several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his mother and father, May and Clifford Richway, and sister, Joan Cluett.
Rest in peace, dear brother.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, February 28th, 2024, from 4-5PM at New Comer Cremations and Funerals. A funeral service with military honors will immediately follow, with Father Fred Daley officiating.
