William A. Powell, 67, of Syracuse, NY, passed away peacefully on November 12, 2023 at his home with his loving family by his side.
He was born on October 4, 1956 in Wicomico, MD to William and Yvonne Powell.
He proudly served his country with the U.S. Air Force. He graduated from Delmar High School, Salisbury State University receiving a Bachelor Degree in Biology, Utah State University receiving a Ph.D. in Biology. He did his postdoctoral graduate research at the University of Florida. His career spanned from 1989-2023 at SUNY-ESF. He worked passionately to restore the American Chestnut and paved the way for the restoration of future trees.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Merrie Beth Powell; children, Jake Thomas (Louis) Taylor and Lilly Fletcher Powell; mother, Yvonne Balcerski.
He was predeceased by his father, William A. Powell Sr.; sister, Pamela Jean Angelini.
A memorial service will be held at Grace Covenant Church, 5300 NY 31, Clay, NY 13041 on Saturday, November 18, 2023 at 9am.
At Bill's request, please dress casually: blue jeans, flannel shirt and white socks are appropriate!
Burial will be private.
