Bill Olson, 80, formerly of Zapaata, TX, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday following a brief illness. Bill was born October 23, 1937 in Chicago, IL. As a child, he spent a lot of time reading and read every children's book in his public library. Bill worked as a general contractor and handyman throughout his life. He was also an avid bicyclist, who took his first trip at age 20 across Europe. He traveled from Rotterdam through Vienna to Rome after attending the World's Fair. In all, Bill rode over 100,000 miles across Europe and 28 US states and he was known by many as "Bicycle Bill". He especially enjoyed riding along the Erie Canal and through the Adirondacks. Bill was never afraid of failure. He felt that any failure or setback should be viewed as a learning experience or education. His strength and determination have been an inspiration to many.
Bill ws predeceased by his parents, Clarence and Margaret Olson, and his brother John Olson. He is survived by his brothers Richard Olson and Thomas (MaryAnn) Olson and many other family members and friends across the country.
A celebration of Bill's life will be held on Saturday, February 3rd, from 2-4pm, at Malta Manor, 107 Trolley Barn Lane, N. Syracuse, NY 13212 in the community room. Bill's family would like to thank Katie, Melanie, and the other wonderful caregivers that he grew close to over the last few years, for their kind, and caring support and love of Uncle Bill.
Bill has requested that donations made in his memory be sent to the North East Community Center Senior Citizen Program, 716 Hawley Ave., Syracuse, NY 13203.
