William Giles Merkling, 72, died Wednesday at Upstate Hospital with family at his side, after back surgery and unexpected lung complications.
Bill grew up in Sherrill and graduated from VVS. He excelled in many sports and upon graduation was signed by the LA Dodgers.
Bill retired from General Motors in 1989. He was thankful for the time he spent with grandkids and the many lasting friendships made while enjoying his interests of auto racing #61, camping, snowmobiling, traveling, the Yankees and, of course, golf .
Bill is survived by his wife of 48 years, Lorraine (Mancini); son, Cliff (Cheri) Merkling; two brothers, Tom (Debra) and Ron (Geri) Merkling; two grandchildren, Griffin and Claudia; sister in law, Jeanine (Dan) Rizzo; brother in law, Mark (Cathy) Mancini; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass will be Monday, 4PM at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church. His family will receive friends following Mass.
