William J. Campbell, Jr.

May 5, 1928 — December 24, 2016

William J. Campbell, Jr., 88, of North Syracuse, passed away Saturday, December 24, 2016.

Born in Syracuse to William Sr. and Kathleen (Niesz) Campbell, he graduated from North High School in 1946.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy Submarine Service in 1946, and served until 1949. After his service he continued his education at Smith Technical School, studying refridgeration and air conditioning. Upon completion, Bill was employed by Carrier Corporation for 33 years, where he was respected, for his competence and work ethic by his superiors, and for his leadership, thoughtfulness and unparalleled safety record by those who worked for and with him. He retired in 1985.

Bill was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Alice B. (Langlois) Campbell, his bother, Thomas Campbell and his grandson, Kris Campbell.

A devout Roman Catholic, Bill has attended Mass at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church since moving to North Syracuse in 1957.

He enjoyed assisting Boy Scout Troop 151 for many years, providing leadership on many monthly camping trips and at Summer Camp in Sabattis. An active sportsman, he excelled at basketball and softball through his thirties and bowling and fishing with Alice throughout his life. As a sports fan Bill enjoyed NY Yankee and Syracuse Chiefs baseball, NY Giants and Syracuse football, college and professional basketball in all uniforms, Crunch hockey and perhaps most of all CNY dirt track auto racing with his son, Mike.

Bill and Alice were well known for their hospitality. At their summer camp on Oneida Lake, they hosted an annual Independence Day picnic, an August Fish Fry, and best of all, a Labor Day clambake for family, friends and any stranger attracted by pleasing aromas, joyous noise and cool legal beverages.

Bill was blessed with wonderful neighbors. He and his family deeply appreciated the many kindnesses they have offered over many years. He loved his family above all else. He was a thoughtful, kind and generous man who guided them with great wisdom and a gentle hand.

Bill is survived by his sons Bill (To Me Hill) Campbell, Michael (Suzanne) Campbell; daughters Linda (Alan) Gnann, Kathleen (Paul Doerle) Campbell and Elizabeth (John) Lindsey; grandsons Simon Lindsey, Zak Campbell and Nik (Lindi Tembo) Campbell who presented him with the final jewel in a life well-lived, his 20 month old great-grandson, William.

A Mass will be held on Thursday, December 29,2016 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.

Entombment will be at St.Mary's Cemetery in DeWitt.

In lieu of flowers or donations, the family requests for all who loved Bill to perform an act kindness and generosity for someone in need. Thank you.
