Werner was a lifelong reader and valued exploring new interests and could discuss a wide range of topics with more than casual depth often enjoying the role of devil's advocate. He bicycled widely until into his 80's. Werner served his country in World War II as a Glider Infantryman with the 17th Division and was part of the Battle of the Bulge. Werner was a gentleman and a scholar.
