Theodora "Teddie" Owen of North Syracuse, NY, passed away on Wednesday, October 20,2021 after suffering complications from a long-term health condition. Teddie was born to the late Herbert Austin, Jr., and Julia Summons on November 23,1942 at St. Vincent's Hospital in Bridgeport, CT.
Teddie was a graduate of Andrew Jackson High School in Queens, NY. She later attended Adelphia University in Garden City, NY, and St John's University in Queens, NY.
Teddie was employed by Long Island Jewish Hospital in Valley Stream, NY for 37 years as a Clinical Lab Technician, working for the chief of staff in the Oncology Department. She assisted on many cancer research projects and published articles about cancer.
Teddie was a member of the Flushing Suburban Civic Association and the 75th Road Civic Association, in the Flushing and Kew Gardens area of New York. These organizations focused on maintaining civic, social, and political affairs within the community. She loved working on various craft projects including sewing, knitting, crocheting, embroidery, beadwork, and numerous other crafts.
Soon after her retirement in 2004, Teddie moved to Syracuse, NY to be closer to her daughter Regina and her grandchildren.
Teddie was always an advocate for cancer research, especially breast cancer research. Teddie participated in several Avon 60-mile walks, as well as the Susan G Komen "Race for The Cure" walk to help fight breast cancer. As a volunteer at the North Area Meals on Wheels, Teddie became a team captain, and was able to enlist fellow volunteers at Meals on Wheels to participate in "The Race for The Cure" walks.
Teddie is pre-deceased by her parents Herbert and Julia; two brothers, Herbert Summons III, and Winthrop Summons; grandson, Gary Morris, Jr.; niece, Denise Summons; and brother-in-law, Marshall Manson.
Teddie leaves to cherish her memory, her adoring daughter, Regina (Gary, Sr.); granddaughter, Aleesha Czyz (Douglas); grandson, Austin Morris; three great-grandsons, Gary III, Avery, and Emery; her sister, Patricia Manson; brothers, Julian (Sutin) Summons, and Ronald (Preeyapan) Summons; along with a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation will be held on Friday, October 29th from 10-11am at Most Holy Rosary Church, 111 Roberts Ave., Syracuse, followed by a funeral mass at 11 am. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery.
