Suzanne M. (Harper) Obrist, 80, of Liverpool, passed away on January 4, 2025. Born in Rome, NY to the late Shirley and Francis Harper. Sue graduated from St. Aloysius Academy and Utica School of Commerce. Sue met John H. Obrist Jr in high school, they fell in love and married on October 23, 1965. After college, Sue worked for General Electric, Bank of NY, and Mack Miller Candle Company doing bookkeeping. Sue was plagued by many painful and debilitating illnesses for the last 45 years. She bravely dealt with her limitations and got joy out of simple pleasures; watching SU basketball, lunch with a friend, shopping, visits with family members, and her favorite food, an order of McDonald’s french fries!
A widow at the young age of 51, Sue found the strength and courage to move forward and meet new friends and volunteer. When physically able, she enjoyed volunteering at Meals on Wheels, seeing friends at Town of Salina Seniors, and attending St. Joseph the Worker Church (Epiphany Parish). No matter how she was feeling, Sue was always ready with a smile and a caring and kind word for others. She took pride in looking her best, even when it was a challenge to do so.
Although distance and health got in the way of more frequent visits, Sue’s heart belonged to her grandchildren. When asked what made her happiest, the answer was always the same, “talking with my grandchildren!”
In addition to her parents, Sue was predeceased by her husband, John H Obrist Jr., and her sister, Katherine Buban. Also predeceased by sisters in law; Patricia Phillips and Carol Benedict, brothers in law; Robert Benedict and Stephen Obrist, and parents in law John and Elizabeth Obrist.
Sue is survived by her devoted children, daughter and primary caregiver, Kimberly (Stephen Zygmont) Obrist of Liverpool, NY, son and daughter in law, John and Ledea Obrist lll of Beaver, PA; her treasured grandchildren, Gabriel, Mikayla, Elijah, and Joshua Obrist; siblings, Jack (Joan) Harper, Patricia (David) Urban, Bernard (Denise) Harper, Michael (Felisa White) Harper. Sue also leaves behind a host of family members that she loved dearly.
Kim and John would like to extend their deepest appreciation to the countless family members and friends that offered their love and support and time in caring for Sue. Its meaning goes beyond words. Also thank you for the kindness of Dr. Michael Kuhn and the Palliative Care team, and Hospice of CNY.
