Sumner Brown Hakes
July 14, 2013
Sumner Brown Hakes, 84, of Fayetteville, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2013. Sumner was born in Ilion, NY, on October 28, 1928, the only child of Alton and Ruth Hakes. Sumner spent all of his childhood in Ilion.
After high school, Sumner convinced his mother to sign the necessary documents to allow him to join the Army at the young age of 17. After a two year tour of duty with the Army's 2nd Infantry Division at the end of WWII, Sumner returned home and enrolled at Utica College all the while remaining available to serve his country in the Army Reserves. It was during his sophomore year he met and started dating the love of his life, Kathryn Ryder. During his junior year in college, his country called on him again. He suddenly found himself on the front lines of the Korean War (often referred to as the forgotten war). As a radio operator Sumner was wounded twice during the war and received two Purple Hearts for his sacrifice. After the war Sumner returned home for good this time. He completed his college education receiving a Bachelors degree in business.
On September 19, 1953, Sumner married Kathryn and they began their life together. Sumner worked hard as a salesman his entire professional life. He could never claim to be rich but he provided a good life for his wife and three children Peter, John, and Liz. In his free time Sumner's pleasures always seemed to revolve around the outdoors. He loved to garden and work around the house. Golf, fishing and camping were also of great interest to him. Sumner had an affinity for the Adirondacks and it became his favorite spot to visit.
Sumner retired in 1997. He spent his retirement enjoying time with family and friends. He took great pride in watching his four beautiful granddaughters grow up into lovely young ladies. He loved caring for and talking to his cats and bird. His life was simple, but he enjoyed every minute of it…
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Kathryn Ryder Hakes; daughter Elizabeth Hakes Gasparini (Lorrin); sons Peter (Linda) and John (Kelly); grandchildren, Nicole Hakes Blossom (Steve), Alysha, Jessica, and Ashley Hakes. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 1:00 PM on Sunday August 4, 2013, at New Comer Funeral Home in North Syracuse, NY.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in Sumner's name to the Syracuse Rescue Mission, 155 Gifford Street, Syracuse, NY 13202.
