On Monday, November 8, 2021, Stanley Lucas Pobutkiewicz died peacefully in the comfort of his home with his close family present. A lifelong resident of greater Syracuse, Stanley was born to his parents, Stanley Chester and Mary (Balamut) Pobutkiewicz on July 1, 1942.
Stan graduated from Sacred Heart School in Syracuse and enrolled at Maritime College at Fort Schuyler in the Bronx, NY. Not only was he a dedicated collegiate, but also an accomplished baseball player who still holds the Maritime College record for batting average in a single season. Stan earned a bachelor's degree in Nuclear Mechanical Engineering and upon graduation in 1964, he served in the Merchant Marines and traveled the world while working on a variety of classes of vessels. After three years of service, he retired from the Merchant Marines as a fully commissioned US Navy Lieutenant. On April 1, 1967 he was married to Bonnie (Pindle), and he began his career as a nuclear mechanical engineer at CAPL Nuclear Facility in West Milton, NY.
In April 1973, they welcomed their only daughter, Cobbie, born in Niskayuna, NY. Stan and Bonnie also lived in Cary, NC where Stan worked as a nuclear mechanical engineer for Carolina Power and Light Company. In 1977, Stan and Bonnie moved back to Syracuse, where he began to work for the New York Power Authority (NYPA) as a nuclear mechanical engineer, project manager, and consultant. In April 1979, they welcomed their only son, Jason to the family. Stan worked at NYPA until his retirement in 2005, although he continued to work as a consultant in the nuclear energy field until 2014.
Giving back to his community was always important to Stan. He was a volunteer at Saint Francis of Assisi Church in Bridgeport, NY, as well as The Bridgeport Civic Organization. He and Bonnie fostered many children before they were blessed with children of their own. He had a warm heart, a great smile, and he was always there for anyone that needed him with an ear to listen, or whatever else someone might need.
An avid golfer, Stan was always up for a round with friends or family, and there was always time for a couple of beers and a few laughs after. Stan will be fondly remembered as a well-mannered gentleman, but he was never a pushover and could get you with one of his great one-liners and quick wit if you didn't stay on your toes. He is survived by his loving wife Bonnie; daughter, Cobbie (Pobutkiewicz) Brundin and her family (Rhett, Lucas, and Olyvia); son, Jason Pobutkiewicz (Sunshine [Misco], Jason, Izabella, and Benjamin), as well as many loving extended family members.
In accordance with Stan's wishes, no calling hours or funeral service will be held, in lieu of a celebration of life for close friends and family, to be held at a later date. Donations in Stan's honor may be made to the American Brain Foundation, in support of the Lewy Body Dementia Fund (support.americanbrainfoundation.org).
