Sigrid E. Essig-Schulze
March 6, 2009
Sigrid Elizabeth Essig-Schulze, 82, of Liverpool, passed away Friday at Crouse Hospital after suffering a stroke. Friends and family were by her side. Born in Kassel, Germany she immigrated to the US in 1948. A lifelong scholar, she graduated Magna Cum Laude from Le Moyne College, obtained an MA in Linguistics from Middlebury College, and continued studies towards her Phd at Syracuse University. She taught and retired from J-D Middle School as a German and French Teacher. While teaching, she developed an exchange program between J-D and her former school in Germany. Sigrid was a communicant of Holy Trinity Church and was a Third Order Carmelite. She was an avid gardener, talented seamstress, dog lover and selflessly helped others. She was creative and gifted, with an ingenious ability to solve problems. She was a true Renaissance woman. Sigrid recently contributed a touching story about her father in post-war Germany which was published in the Post Standard's, 2008, Neighbors North, Christmas story Edition. Our mother was our touchstone and our rock.
She is survived by her husband, Herbert Otto Schulze; 3 daughters, Sylvia L. (Robert) Ellis, Evelyn M. (William) Meyer, Christina M. (Darrell Marcy) Essig; her first husband Nelson Essig, a brother, Otto Wilhelm Saenger; a sister, Sylvia Mitter; 4 grandchildren, Eric, Kristen, Robert and Richard; 3 great grandchildren, McKenzie, Colin and Zoë; several nephews and nieces, including Ginny D'Estree (Derek) Cox, and her cantankerous dog Rusty.
There will be no calling hours. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 4th, at Holy Trinity Church, Syracuse. (That's 9:00 for you, Mom, so don't be late!)
Contributions in Sigrid's name may be made to Catholic Charities – Refugee Services.
