On April 7th, two months shy of her 90th birthday, the toughest Irishwoman God ever put on this planet, Sheila Tierney, passed peacefully into the next realm surrounded by her loving family.
To refer to her life as anything but remarkable would be a disservice but you would never hear that from her. What anyone would call heroic she would simply call "getting the job done". Born on June 10th 1934, in Fulton NY, Sheila was one of the first Nurse Practitioners in New York State and a graduate of Empire State College, she eventually became the manager of Substance Abuse Services at Crouse Hospital where she worked for 40 years, treating addiction as a disease before that was common acceptance. Prior to that she worked in the same field at St. Mary's Hospital where she was that facility's final administrator.
She did all these things while at the same time raising three young boys by herself after the untimely death of her husband John. Her kids have no memory of her ever complaining or feeling sorry for herself or seeing life's challenges as insurmountable. "Just take it as it comes and stop worrying so much" she used to say, a lesson carried forth to this day by her boys.
She was preceded in death by her husband John, her siblings Kevin Flynn and Patricia Flynn, and by her parents Joesph and Agnes Flynn.
She is survived by her sons, John (Jacqueline), Jimmy and Patrick (Robin), as well as her beloved grandsons Owen and Fionn. Sheila also leaves behind several sisters-in-law who were more like sisters to her, and a few dozen nieces and nephews.
Per her wishes there will be no funeral or calling hours (if you knew her, you know).
Sheila will be missed every day, there was nobody quite like her.
