Savalan "George" Harriger, 89, of Homer, passed away January 6, 2023. George was born in Valois, New York on September 7, 1933 to Ell Nora Gallow and Joseph George Harriger.
George proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1953-1955 during the Korean War, where he was honorably discharged as Corporal. He was the original owner of the Montour Barber Shop in Montour Falls and The Village Barber Shop in Liverpool, NY. He was a three time NY State Grand Champion Fiddle Player. He was inducted into the NYS Fiddlers Hall of Fame (1977) and the NYS Country Music Hall of Fame (2004), he won the NYS Old Time Fiddle Contest three times, and had composed 26 Old Time Fiddle Tunes, and has three albums to his credit. His repertoire of danceable Old Time, Country and Popular tunes had proven to make his performance a hit with many people of all ages. George played for the Nashville Grand Masters and was invited to play a second time. He played in many music festivals across the New York Southern Tier and Northern PA. George appeared on multiple radio and TV shows, and had accompanied entertainers from the Nashville Grand Ole Opry. In his free time, he enjoyed listening to various genres of music, making homemade whistles and spinning tops, picking berries, digging leaks, hunting, and taking walks in the woods. George was a member of the American Legion Post #0676. He was a regular patron of Kory's Diner in Homer, NY and part of the Thursday morning breakfast club at the Cuyler Diner.
He was preceded in death by his parents Ell Nora Gallow and Joseph George Harriger; brothers, Hugh Harriger, Joseph Harriger, and David "Frank" Harriger.
George is survived by his daughter, Linda (Milo) Muirhead; sons, Savalan (Lorraine) Harriger Jr. and Steven (Tina) Harriger; step-son, William (Mary Ellen) O'Rand; grandchildren, Edward (Patricia) Graves, Rachel (Bo Hayes) Harriger, Jaimie (Matthew Perry) Harriger, Austin Savalan Harriger, and Taylor Netti; great grandchildren, Rebecca (Carmen Mauro) Graves, Zackary Graves, Rylee Ward, Layne Perry, Luke Perry, Norah Hayes, Ashtyn Hayes, and Lawson Perry; one great-great granddaughter, Peyton Mauro; brother, Robert Harriger; and sisters, Nina Dioguardi, Ellen Kay Schneckenburger, and Ann Marie Morse.
There will be no services at this time. A Celebration of Life will be held in his memory in the spring. Memorial contributions may be made in George's name to the Old Tyme Fiddler's Association of New York or any American Legion Post.
