Robert W. Varney, 79, of Clay, passed away January 7, 2019.
Robert was born in Syracuse, New York on November 22, 1939 to the late John and Mary Varney.
He was preceded in death by his Wife, Roberta "Bobbi" Varney and Adoptive Parents, Nunzio R. and Leda DeDio.
Bob played lacrosse at Syracuse University in his earlier years. He played minor league baseball for the NY Mets. He later worked as a special education teacher and went on to become a High School Principal and Assistant Superintendent at Fayetteville-Manlius School District. He eventually became director of the Small Business Developmental Center at Onondaga Community College and where he retired from.
In his free time he was an avid Civil War historian, lifelong lover of German Shepherds, die hard Cleveland Indians and Montreal Canadiens fan. He would also volunteer at Meals on Wheels and Elderwood Care at Birchwood. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and attending their activities.
He is survived by his Sons, Eric (Julie) Varney and Craig (Janell) Varney; Sisters, Betty Butler, Linda Flynn and Barbara Pauley; Brother, Rich DeDio; Sisters-In-Law, Angie Varney and Patricia Petrie; Grandchildren, Anthony, Ethan, Jackson, Olivia and Liam.
Visitation will take place on Thursday from 4-7 PM at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, N. Syracuse. A funeral mass will be held on Friday at 9 AM at St. Daniel's Church with entombment to follow in Woodlawn Mausoleum.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Meals on Wheels, North Syracuse and Helping Hounds.
