Robert "Bob" Sturge

Robert "Bob" Sturge of Liverpool, New York passed away Wednesday, December 5, 2012 at home following a long illness. "Bob" graduated from Nottingham High School '43, enlisted in the Army Air Corp and entered Syracuse University in 1946.
He received his B.A. from SU in 1950 and was an active member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Alpha Phi Omega, Orange Key, Tau Theta Upsilon and the ROTC Scabbard and Blade Honorary. His military service as a veteran of WWII continued upon the completion of the ROTC program and he served in the Air Force Reserves until he was honorably discharged as a Lt. Col. in 1977.
Upon his graduation from Syracuse University, Bob accepted a management training position with Sears, Roebuck Management Training Program in Schenectady, Rochester and Syracuse. After this five year employment, he decided to leave retailing. He returned to Syracuse University, earned his Master's Degree in Business Education and pursued a teaching opportunity at North High School in Syracuse until it closed in 1964. His career path in education followed with teaching/administrative employment in the Liverpool
School District, Powelson Business Institute and ultimately his retirement from the Business Office of the Syracuse City School District in 1980. During this period of employment, he continued to be active in several professional organizations and participated in school, church and scouting activities both as an interested spectator and as a volunteer.
Bob was an Eagle Scout and devoted many hours of service during his work career to Boy Scout programs. He was a willing volunteer to North Area Meals on Wheels, North Area Crop Walk and as an AARP Tax Aide. He was an active member at Andrews Memorial United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir and served several years as a trustee.
Bob was an avid reader, golfer, gardener and traveler. He especially enjoyed spending summer days at his camp on Millsite Lake. In addition to swimming and canoeing, he enjoyed putting together jigsaw puzzles with visiting grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his first wife of twenty-seven years, Evelyn Vock Sturge and his brother, Dr. Donald C. Sturge.
He is survived by his loving wife, Marie Anderson Sill Sturge, two sons, Rev. Dr. Robert H. Sturge, (Mary) of North Carolina and Kenneth Edward Sturge (Bentley) of Watertown, two daughters, Suzanne E. Eastwood (Kenneth) of Middletown, New York and Nancy S. Ingersoll (Michael) of Saratoga Springs, New York. Two stepchildren also survive: Susan M. LaRosa (Marty) of Webster and Richard D. Sill (Lori) of Liverpool. Fourteen grandchildren also survive.
Calling hours will be on Friday, December 14, 2012 from two to four and seven to nine at Newcomer Funeral Home at 705 North Main Street, North Syracuse, New York 13212. A Memorial Service will be held at Andrews Memorial United Methodist Church, 106 Church Street on Saturday December 15, 2012 at 11:00 a.m.
