Robert S. Metzner, 92, of Bradford Pkwy, Syracuse, made his transition on October 30, 2017. Bob was a graduate of Nottingham High School. He served in the Army Air Force in WWII and was a lifelong member of the Disabled American Veterans.
He received a bachelor's degree in Industrial Design and an associate's degree in Applied Science from Syracuse University, graduating cum laude. He took graduate studies in Experimental Psychology at the Syracuse and Ohio State Universities.
He was a research engineer with North American Aviation and a Consultant Industrial Designer in Columbus, OH, he was a program manager with the corporate industrial design center of SCM Corp. retiring after 25 years. He was the recipient of numerous design patents and received design awards from product engineering magazines and the British council of design for contributing to the design of one of the 10 best products manufactured in the US and Great Britain respectively in the years of introduction.
He was past vice president of the Western New York chapter of the human factors society; president of the Empire Statesman Toastmasters club, president of the SCM Men's bowling league and member of the Industrial Designers Institute.
He was a long time member of Unity Church of Syracuse, serving as head usher, steward, member of the finance committee and gardener. A major interest of his in later years was the study of religious philosophy.
Bob was a member of the Syracuse Charger's and enjoyed competing in track & field events in the NY State Senior games and the master's division of the Empire State games over a period of twenty years. He was nationally ranked in the javelin and high jump events in his later years.
Bob leaves two daughters, Shannon Thompson of DeWitt, NY and Tina Smith-Tyson of Liverpool, NY; 4 grandchildren; close friend Patricia M. Bright of Nedrow; 6 godchildren to whom he was devoted. He was often reminded of the words of Mother Theresa, "we can do so little but with so much love."
There are no calling hours or funeral service. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
