Robert J. Chamberlin, affectionately known as "Animal," left us on March 5, 2025, in his beloved hometown of Syracuse, New York. Born on November 29, 1941, Robert was a uniquely vibrant soul, whose personality resonated with all who crossed his path. He was more than just a police officer; he was a pillar of his community, embodying the spirit of loyalty, compassion, and an ever-present wit that could illuminate even the darkest of days.
Robert’s life was a testament to dedication, beginning with his graduation from Solvay High School in 1960. In 1964, he joined the Syracuse Police Department, where he served with honor until his retirement in 1984. His remarkable career saw him not only wearing the badge but also earning the respect and admiration of his colleagues and the public alike. As a decorated officer, he amassed numerous accolades including the prestigious Francis Hendricks Medal, alongside two Merit Valor awards and countless commendations. His commitment to law enforcement didn’t cease upon retirement; he continued to devote his time as a guard for Lockheed Martin, Bristol, and even volunteered at the Syracuse Police Benevolent Association, remaining steadfastly dedicated to his brothers and sisters in blue.
Known for his unique ability to connect with people, Robert's charm was undeniable. He had a heart big enough to befriend anyone, weaving relationships wherever he went. A keen observer of the human condition, his quick comebacks and sharp one-liners provided humor to those around him, bringing joy and laughter into everyday conversations. Whether reminiscing about classic cars or sharing tales from his younger days filled with adventures and mischief, he left a mark through his stories and the memories created along the way.
In addition to his professional accolades, Robert was a proud family man, having shared a loving partnership with Lorraine Lumia. He was the devoted father to Charles (Yvette) Knapp and Jeffrey (Christine) Knapp, taking immense pride in their accomplishments. His legacy continues to thrive in his grandchildren—Sara and Cory Knapp—whom he cherished and inspired, as well as his great-grandchildren—Caiden, Allison, Chase Knapp, and Jake Maurer—whose laughter and innocence brought him boundless joy. Sara was pinned with Robert's badge number by Robert when she joined the Syracuse Police Department with pride and to this day Robert is always on patrol with Sara.
Robert leaves behind the warm embrace of love, his loyal canine companions, and an indelible imprint on the hearts of those who knew him. His jovial spirit, steadfast loyalty, and the breadth of his compassion will echo through the lives of all he touched. He is predeceased by his parents, Robert and Veronica Chamberlin, whose love nurtured the man he became.
