In Loving Memory: Richard D. Parker, A Life of Service, Love, and Laughter
It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we mourn the loss of Richard D. Parker, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and brother, who passed away on July 10th, 2023, at the age of 92. Richard's departure leaves a void that can never be filled, as his presence and love touched the lives of so many.
Richard was born on May 4th, 1931, in Plattsburg, NY, the third of six children to Daniel and Marie Parker. His childhood was spent in Fort Edward, NY, and Jamestown, NY, where he graduated from Jamestown High School in 1950. Deeply committed to serving his country, Richard enlisted in the United States Navy and proudly served during the Korean War. After completing his military service, he pursued further education at SUNY ESF Ranger School in Wanakena, NY, where he honed his skills and knowledge.
Following his graduation from the Ranger School, Richard dedicated himself to the noble cause of safeguarding his community. He served as a City of Jamestown Police Officer, valiantly protecting and serving the public. His unwavering commitment to public service led him to embark on a fulfilling career in State Park Management. For 30 years, Richard excelled as Park Superintendent, overseeing Long Point State Park, Chittenango Falls State Park, and Verona Beach State Park until his well-deserved retirement.
Richard's love extended beyond his professional endeavors, as he was a devoted family man. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jean M. Parker (Young), with whom he shared the joy of raising four children. Daniel, Bonnie, Wendy, and Doug were the center of Richard's world, and his love for them knew no bounds. Later in life, he found love again and married Dorothy H. Fuller, embracing her as his partner for 35 incredible years. He formed a strong bond with Dorothy's son, Mark Fuller, adding another layer of love and family to his life.
Richard's multifaceted nature shone through in his various passions and hobbies. An avid golfer, he found solace and joy on the greens, playing almost daily. He also delighted in the serenity of fishing, casting his line for trout and walleye. Richard's talents extended to the realm of woodworking, where he showcased his skills by creating remarkable wood turnings. His artistry was shared through demonstrations at the New York State Fair, with the proceeds benefiting charitable causes close to his heart. Additionally, Richard was an active and dedicated volunteer at his church, Cicero United Methodist, embodying the spirit of selflessness by giving countless hours back to his community.
Richard's memory will forever be cherished by his loving wife, Dorothy, and his children Daniel (Jill), Bonnie (Brad), Wendy (Frank), Doug (Micae), and stepson Mark (Polly). He will also be deeply missed by his grandchildren Kathryn, Lyndsey, Jessica, Brad Jr., Frank Jr., Shannon, Shane, Rhiannon, Aidan, Hannah, seven great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
