Richard K. Surine, 80, died peacefully on February 16, 2012, in Syracuse following complications from out-patient surgery. Dick was a 23-year heart transplant survivor. Dick was a self-taught, registered architect, whose passion was architecture and design. After a memorable career in the architecture/engineering field, he retired from Binghamton University Facilities Department in 2003. Dick was a Korean War vet and loved life. Over his many years he enjoyed sports car racing, sailing, bicycling, camping, travel, and reading. He was very interested in the cosmos, the possibility of other life in the universe, technology, and politics. Dick thrived in the midst of his family, who adored him.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn; children Dyke (Karyn) Surine, Scott (Karen Borkowski) Surine, Valerie (Mike) Bergin, Dan (Rowdy Dyer) Weil, and Caren (Nigel) Fowler; sisters Eleanor (Leigh) Jones, Margie (David) Dunkiel, and Barbara (Alan) Zdimal; as well as seven grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
