February 26, 2016

Richard (Dick) M. Dickson, beloved son, husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather who devoted his life to providing for his ever-growing family, entered into the presence of his Lord February 26th after a brief illness. He was 84. He died peacefully at his home in Cicero, New York with his loving family by his side. Dick was preceded in death by his much-loved wife of 60 years, Lois and is survived by his three children; Joseph Dickson (Mary), Kathleen Dolbear (Marty), and Lorieanne Byers (Eric); his grandchildren Scott, Sam, Shaun, Katie, Paul, Kyle, Tom, Nicole, Evan, Mary, Jenn, Ben and Rachel; and 9 great grandchildren. Dick was a life-long resident of Central New York having grown up on a farm on Route 31 in Cicero that became well known as "Dickson's Acres". He worked at his parent's fruit and vegetable stand on their farm and in his early twenties Richard worked for "Easy Washer" and "Syracuse China". In 1955 he began working at the Onondaga County Highway Department of Transportation and advanced from a construction worker and snowplow driver to Onondaga County Highway Superintendent. Richard was a very hard worker and he built his family's home while working full time at the county. He retired in 1980 after 25 years with the department and later sold flowers at the farm stand. He was caregiver to his mother for 20 years after his father died and to his wife Lois, who was ill for many years. He loved planting flowers and caring for them, especially his roses and spent hundreds of hours planting and tending bushes, trees and flowers at a local church. Dick was an avid hunter, fisherman, camper, and sports fan. He was a generous person quick to offer help of any kind to his family and others. He was a happy, funny person who made us all laugh a lot and who was especially devoted to his grandchildren and great grandchildren who brought him so much happiness. Richard loved the Lord with all of his heart and encouraged his grandchildren to do the same. Dad/Pop will be greatly missed by many people but especially by his loving family. We love you Dad/Pop, say hi to Mom/Nan for us.
A celebration of Richard Dickson's life will take place on March 5th at Malden Road United Church of Christ in Mattydale at 1:00pm.
