Raymond Richard Stevens, 91, of Lafayette received his eternal reward from the Lord on Thursday, May 2, 2019, while surrounded by his family.
Raymond was a Korean War Veteran and served in the US army from 1948-1952. He married the love of his life, Mardella, on December 23, 1950. Ray and Mardella moved to the Syracuse area in 1953, settling in Lafayette for the last 60 years. Raymond was a faithful attendee of the Assemblies of God Church and was employed by LB Smith Inc. until he retired. Raymond was an avid hunter, woodworker, gardener, and loved to watch the Atlanta Braves. Additionally, he loved to sing the hymns and share his faith with many.
It was his joy to bring a smile everywhere he went especially to the ladies of the VA Medical Center during each visit. He often asked them "Have you had a kiss lately?" And then immediately would pull some candy kisses from his pocket to share with a smile. He loved to joke with them to make their days brighter.
He was predeceased by Mardella, his wife of 59 years; Beverly, his daughter; his parents, Herbert and Sadie Stevens; his sisters Helen and Bertha; and one brother, Herbert.
Raymond is survived by five daughters, Darlene Scott, Connie Stevens, Ellen Stevens, Faith Stevens, and Sharon (Barry) Cook; two sons, Patrick (Barb) Stevens, and Mark Stevens; a sister, Mildred Jones; and a multitude of grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews; friends and his faithful companion since the passing of his wife, his beagle, Mitsy Sue.
A celebration of life will take place Friday, May 10th, 2 pm at Grace Assembly of God Church, 4220 Fay Road Syracuse, NY 13219. Friends are invited to share in this celebration. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the Low Vision Clinic at the VA Hospital in Syracuse.
