R. Kent Stuetz, 68 of Liverpool, New York passed away on August 28, 2022 at home after a 6-year battle with cancer. He was born on March 2, 1954 in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California. He attended Lowell High School and graduated in 1972. On May 13, 1978, Kent married Deborah Hales in the Oakland California Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He and his family have lived in Utah, California, Missouri, Pennsylvania, and finally New York, where they have lived for the past 30 years.
Kent graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in General Studies in 1979 and received a Master's degree in American Studies at Pennsylvania State University in 1990. He was the head of the Central New York Regional Office of the New York State Archives from 1991 until his retirement in 2016.
Kent was a deeply spiritual man. He became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at the age of 17 and served as a full time missionary for the Church in Denmark from 1974 to 1976. He spent most of his adult life actively serving in the Church as a Bishop, Gospel Doctrine instructor, Singles Branch President, and counselor in three consecutive Stake Presidencies, before becoming the 7th president of the Syracuse Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He cared deeply for the people whom he served in his many church capacities.
Kent was a master gardener, avid genealogist, preparedness expert, techie, foodie, and records specialist, and he greatly enjoyed wood working projects. He never did anything halfway. He was a lifelong learner and loved trying new things. Kent had a magnetic personality with a quick wit, killer sense of humor, and an infectious laugh and smile. He was a devoted husband, father, uncle, and grandfather, beloved by all.
Kent is survived by his wife Deborah Stuetz, his sister Sherry Cutting, his five children: Rebekah Thompson, Adam Stuetz, Angela Torres, Christina Madsen, and Daniel Stuetz, their spouses, and his 16 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Donald and Ora Irene Stuetz, and his brother-in-law Tom Cutting.
His funeral will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 4889 Bear Rd. Liverpool, NY 13088 on Saturday, September 3, 2022 at 10am with a family receiving line at 9am.
