Philip Howard Austin, 74, died at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse, NY on September 29, 2024. He was born in Corning, NY on February 1, 1950, son of Henry Delbert Austin and the former Violet Ruth Howard. He was a committed Christian and a longtime member of North Baptist Church. He served as a short-term missionary to France in 1977. He graduated from Corning-Painted Post East High School in 1968. He earned a B. S. in Engineering at Letourneau University in Longview, TX in 1972 and later gained a M.S. in Engineering Management from C. W. Post in Brookville, New York, on Long Island. He was a Reliability Engineer at Hazeltine Corporation in Greenlawn, NY for 10 years. He moved to Baldwinsville, NY in 1988 to work for GE, Martin-Marietta, and Lockheed Martin through all the iterations as an Electrical Engineer. He was a longtime member of Faith Baptist Church in Baldwinsville and played trumpet in the Baldwinsville Community Band. He served as Director of Corning Area Bible Club Camp and was an Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 143 in Memphis, NY. He married the former Susan Marie Rockwell on August 5,1978 in Campbell, NY. His family gratefully sends special thanks to Mark Carter at St. Joseph’s Physical Therapy for his generous, kind care of Phil for more than ten years.
He was predeceased by his sister, Cheryl, who died as an infant.
Philip is survived by his loving wife, Susan Austin; four children, Benjamin Rockwell Austin (Ginger), of Baldwinsville, Elisabeth Rose Austin of Sumter, SC, Caleb Philip Austin (Jenny) of Richland, NY, and Catherine “Katie” Mary Spiller (Brandon) of Bennington, VT; grandchildren, Brianna DeMello, Kylie DeMello, Amelia, Henry and Lucy Austin, and Tobias Spiller; one great granddaughter, Sylvia Mauro; and three brothers, Steven Austin (Joanne), of Indiana, Daniel Austin (Terri), and Mark Austin (Andrea), both of Corning.
Services will be held at Faith Baptist Church in Baldwinsville on Saturday, October 5. The family will be receiving friends from 2-4 pm and the funeral service will follow from 4-5PM. Dinner for all will be at 5PM.
