Paul Ignatius Fernandes, 68, a loving husband and father, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on December 13, 2016 in Syracuse, NY.
He was born on October 8, 1948 to Diogo Juberto Patricio Roberto Fernandes and Rosa Maria das Neves Peres Fernandes in Bangalore, India. His family also resided in Porvorim, Goa (India).
Paul moved to the United States in 1977. He began attending the math and science program at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse, NY, where he would later meet his wife playing mixed table tennis tournaments and winning trophies together.
Paul and Reneé were married in 1981, and spent their honeymoon in India. They have been married for 35 years.
Paul had a very outgoing, fun-loving personality, and was an avid athlete for most of his life. In his younger years he enjoyed playing cricket, badminton and tennis, and also enjoyed boxing. He would later impart his athleticism to his two children, Natalie and Brandon, his pride and joy. He especially loved teaching them how to play tennis, instilling in them a shared passion for the sport which would continue throughout their college careers.
After OCC, Paul began working for Onondaga County as an Instrumentation Technician, a position he held for 38 years before retiring in 2010.
Surviving are his devoted wife Reneé, his two children Natalie and Brandon, his sister Jeanette (Gabriel) Castelino, four nephews,Benjamin, Von, Gregory and Zyrek, five nieces Melanie, Maria, Erin, Magdalini and Nirel. He was predeceased by his three brothers, Roosevelt, Peter and Terence and both parents.
Calling hours will take place on Tuesday, December 20, 2016 at New Comer Funeral Home, 705 N. Main St., North Syracuse, NY 13212 from 4-7PM.
Service will follow at 7PM. Interment will remain private.
