Patrick H. Fullan Jr.

January 18, 1947 — April 23, 2018

Patrick H. Fullan, Jr. died on Monday, April 23rd, at Central Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, in Syracuse, New York, after contending with Parkinson's disease for several years. He was 71 years old, and was born January 18, 1947, to the late Gertrude and Patrick H. Fullan, Sr.

Patrick grew up on Long Island, and as an adult, lived for many years in Syracuse and Baldwinsville, NY. Patrick graduated from Iona College with a Baccalaureate degree in 1971, and from Long Island University: C.W. Post Center with a Masters degree in hospital administration in 1975.

He worked for many years as a nurse's aide at Loretto Nursing Home, where he gave attentive and personal care to many elderly people.

He loved classical music, especially Beethoven, and played the piano, organ, and baritone horn. He enjoyed traveling, camping, and having adventures. Patrick was also an excellent basketball player, and remained a huge fan of S.U. basketball throughout his life—even this past March, when he was somewhat disoriented to current events, he was quite aware of the NCAA playoffs!

Patrick was an excellent cook, and loved to watch cooking shows and try out new recipes. He took pleasure in experimentation and in sharing his meals. In his 40s, Patrick took up running, and would run for up to ten miles a day for many years. He loved the time he spent in nature while running, the things he learned about himself in the practice, and the dogs who would sometimes run alongside him from neighboring houses.

He was immensely kind and curious about all aspects of life, from the mysteries of space to the minute details of human experience, which lead to lifelong fascinations with and pleasure in physics and Zen Buddhism. He had been sober for many decades, and brought insights from A.A. to many others outside of the program. He loved to learn, and had a great commitment to seeking out the truth of the world and his own life, and he loved talking to people and sharing their understandings of life.

Patrick was a storyteller and a story lover. He loved science fiction and fantasy, especially Star Trek, and always found pleasure in the movies and books that brought these stories to him. He loved to make others laugh, and one of the nurses who was caring for him at the end of his life said that even as his voice got less audible, he continued making her laugh. He always tried hard to understand the world and to connect with others, and this never changed.

Patrick was predeceased by his son, Patrick Chiappone Fullan, who died in infancy, his parents Patrick and Gertrude, and his brothers Richard and Daniel. He is survived by his daughter Rebecca (Charlotte Rahn-Lee), of New York, NY, his sisters Susan, of Syracuse, NY, and Lisa, of New York, NY, his nephews Adam and Ross (Jen), of Long Island, and his long-time companion and partner, Sharon Maul, of Baldwinsville, NY. He is also survived by loving friends, especially Tony and Marian DiFabbio and Mal and Elsie Ford.

His family is extremely grateful to all who cared for him in recent months, especially his former wife and friend, Linda Fullan, and all the staff at Central Park. Patrick remained brave, curious, and loving through the difficulty of his declining health.

A memorial mass for Patrick will be held at 10 AM on Saturday, April 28th at All Saints Church, 1342 Lancaster Ave., Syracuse, NY. Calling hours will be from 4-7 PM on Sunday, April 29th at New Comer Funeral Home, 705 North Main Street, North Syracuse, NY. All are very welcome to attend these events.

Donations in Patrick's honor may be made to the Parkinson's Foundation (http://parkinson.org/) or the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research (https://www.michaeljfox.org/foundation). If you have some time to remember him and would like to, please take a walk somewhere you find beautiful, listen to some Beethoven, and talk over a question you have about the world with someone who is as curious and kind as he has always been.
