Owen Paul "OP" Honors, Sr., 88, of Clay, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 25th surrounded by his family.
He was born in Syracuse to the late Charles and Marion (Owens) Honors. OP graduated from high school in 1952 and entered the U.S. Marine Corps. in 1953. He served his country proudly during the Korean Conflict. After being honorably discharged, he joined the NYS Police in 1957, starting his 50 plus year career in law enforcement. He was a member of the NYS Police for 20 years and retired as a Senior Investigator in 1977. After his State Police retirement he was appointed the Commissioner of Public Safety for the Town of Clay. OP led the Town of Clay Police Department until it merged with the Onondaga County Sheriffs Department in 2008.
He enjoyed working in his garage and the door was always open to anyone who stopped by. OP enjoyed flying airplanes, fishing on his boat in Cape Vincent and spending time with his grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, Ruth Irene (Schaap) Honors and his sister, Marilyn Honors.
OP is survived by his children, Owen P. Honors, Jr., Kelly Honors, Tracy H. (Darren) Rosenberg and Amy (David) Carroll; grandchildren, Samantha (Zac), Catherine (Brad), Heidi, Carleigh, Hanna, Molly, Hayden, Phoebe and Ben; great-grandson, Nicholas; and a sister, Sr. Marion Charlene.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 31st 4-7pm at New Comer Cremations & Funerals in N. Syracuse.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday 11am at the funeral home with burial in Pine Plains Cemetery and military honors to follow.
