Nelson Sterling Essig, 98, of Liverpool, passed away Friday, April 30th, at home. Born in 1911 in West Orange, NJ, he moved to Syracuse in 1966. As a youth, he graduated from high school at the age of 16 and attained Scouting's highest honor, the rank of Eagle Scout. He was a veteran of WWII, attending Officer Candidate School, where he became a "90 Day Wonder" after joining the Army in 1942. He was assigned to the 581st Anti Aircraft Artillery Battalion. He was discharged as a Captain in 1946. During his service in Germany, he met and eventually married Sigrid Saenger in 1948.
After the war, he completed his degree in Accounting at Columbia University, while working and raising a family in Oakland, NJ. He had a 46-year career as a Systems Analyst working for MONY (AXA), retiring to his greatest passion, gardening. For many years he visited our local farmer's market, eager to add many blooms to his garden paradise. His lovely baritone voice and love of music led him to join the Barbershoppers both in New Jersey and Syracuse. He was a member of SPEBSQSA (now called the Barbershop Society of America) for over 60 years, arranging music, writing the newsletters, and adding his voice to both his quartet and the chorus. His daughters remember many a night being lulled to sleep by his sweet voice. He will be remembered for his wonderful smile, which endeared him to all.
He is survived by three daughters, Sylvia L. (Robert) Ellis, Evelyn M. (William) Meyer, Christina M. (Darrell Marcy) Essig, four grandchildren, Eric, Kristen, Robert, and Richard; four great-grandchildren, McKenzie, Colin, Zoe and Jack; many nephews and nieces, including Ginny D'Estree (Derek) Cox.
A special thank-you goes out to the many healthcare workers, who gave of themselves, including: Dr. Noonan and Dr. Berkery and their Staff (Michelle), Hospice of CNY (Darlene) and his loving home caretakers, Helen Dutton, Pat Bush, Kim Cook, Terri Mazzye, and Rich Mazzye. We could not have completed his journey with such dignity, love and care without each and every one of you.
A memorial "Open House" will be celebrated on June 13th for family and friends.
