Michael Cridland

May 11, 1932 — December 9, 2020

Michael Cridland, 88, passed away from complications of Covid-19 December 9, at University Hospital. He was born to Frank and Evelyn Cridland May 11, 1932 in Stratford, England. Michael was educated at Harrow and Ealing Schools of Art in London, majoring in sculpture. He was very modest about his talents and would be the last to mention that his work was exhibited at the age of 15 in the Netherlands. He married Patricia Cridland and emigrated to Canada and then the U.S., where he made his living as a designer in such noted firms as Smith, Scherr & McDermott in Ohio, Van Dyck Associates in Connecticut, Russel Wright Associates in New York City, Crouse-Hinds and Pulos Design Associates in Syracuse, New York. Michael later joined the faculty of Syracuse University's College of Visual and Performing Arts, where he taught classes ranging from figure drawing to industrial design, and exhibited in faculty shows. He was a longtime member of the Industrial Designers Society of America. He was commissioned by The Sisters of St. Francis to create a statue of St. Marianne Cope, the first saint from Syracuse, New York. Michael's passion for sculpting continued throughout his life as he worked in his home studio despite ongoing physical obstacles.

His family, who are deeply saddened, include his longtime companion Marti Heald, who was an amazing source of support; daughter, Lee; granddaughter, Katherin; son Ward and his family Bridget, Kaia, and Erren; former wife, Patricia, with whom he remained friends; brother Neil of Somerset, England; and sister-in-law Enid of Toronto, Canada.

Michael was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Peter. His family also wishes to thank the sixth floor staff at Loretto's Cunningham for their care following his 2018 automobile accident, which left him unable to live independently as he had wished. Michael's work lives on as a legacy to his passion and commitment to the creative process.

A celebration of Michael's life will be announced at a later date.
