Matthew J. Sheehan, 56, of Liverpool, passed away August 31, 2023. Matthew was born in Syracuse, New York on August 23, 1967 to Thomas and Eileen Sheehan. He grew up with his four brothers on Tipperary Hill.
Matthew was a Staff Seargent in the United States Airforce, he served from October 5, 1987 to January 1st, 1996. He was a Security Journeyman and a Missile Facility Manager. Matthew served in Operation Desert Shield/Storm. He was also stationed in Germany and witnessed the Berlin Wall come down in 1989. His final assignment was in Minot North Dakota. He was awarded the Airforce Achievement Medal with two devices, Airforce Commendation Medal with one device, Airforce Overseas Long Tour Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, and Airforce Outstanding Unit Award with two devices.
Matthew worked for the New York State Department of Labor, as a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist. He loved his job fiercely and it brought him much pride. As his son, Joe, said "Dad only went to work so he could talk to people". He was devoted to the Veterans he worked with; helping them navigate life after service. He found great joy in sharing their similar experiences in the US military.
Matthew was loved by all and always brought warmth and love to every occasion. "He never met a stranger" and always found good in others.
Matthew's Irish heritage was central to his life and he would celebrate being an Irishman any chance he could. In his free time, he enjoyed hunting and fishing; although he fell asleep more often than using up his tags.
Matthew was a gentle soul that always put others first. He loved his family above all and fought for them until the very end.
He was preceded in death by his Father, Thomas M. Sheehan.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Ellen Sheehan whom he met at Blarney Stone in 1992. They were soul mates and he loved her unconditionally from the beginning. He is also survived by his mother, Eileen, two daughters, Danielle Sheehan and Cayley Sheehan; son, Joseph Sheehan; four Brothers, Thomas & Emelyn Sheehan, Mark & Vicki Sheehan, Timothy & Jillian, and Patrick Sheehan; two Brother-In-Laws, James Maida, Joseph & Wendy Maida.
Family and friends may call on Tuesday, September 5, 2023 from 3:00 pm-5:00 pm at New Comer Cremations & Funerals - North Syracuse, 705 N. Main St. Syracuse, where funeral services with Military Honors will be held at 5:00 pm.
Memorial contributions may be made to The Wounded Warrior Project in lieu of flowers.
