Mary Calista Schmidt (Smith), 84, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones in her home on Sunday, April 7th, 2024.
Mary was born in Victory, NY to Norris and Dorothy Smith and raised in Phoenix, NY, graduating from Phoenix High School in 1957.
She married her high school sweetheart, Rolland, in 1965, celebrating 58 years together.
Mary worked at Syracuse China and ESTA Safety Park Drag Strip for many years.
She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, classic country music, drag racing, and going to the casino, always ending with a grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup. While visiting Mary, her living room would always be stocked full with pringles, cheese puffs, knitting needles, and a loud TV.
Mary loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, always knitting blankets, hats, and even coats for their stuffed animals. In her younger years, she enjoyed traveling, golf, bowling, bingo, and bunko with friends.
She will be remembered most as a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend who always made sure her voice was heard. Mary will be missed immensely by all who knew her, especially her family.
Mary is survived by her loving husband, Rolland; children, Rolland Jr. "Chip" (Cheryl) and Robin (Chuck); grandchildren, Nicole, Colleen (Vince), Peter (Monica) and Paige; great-grandchildren, Leah, Owen, Vincenzo, Salvatore, and Mia; sisters, Esther (Jim), and Dottie (Frank); along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Mary was predeceased by her parents and siblings, Harriet (Joseph), William (Deeda), Barbara (Clarence), Margaret (Anthony), Genny (Jim), Shirley (Frank), Norris Jr, (Patricia) and Sonny (Myrtle).
In lieu of flowers, consider to honor Mary with a donation to D.R.A.W. (Drag Racing Association of Women), "fast help for fast friends" within the drag racing community.
