Mary E. Severance June 24, 2012
Mary Elizabeth Simon Severance, 82, of Fayetteville,died Sunday June 24 at Loretto. A native of Rye, NY, she was the daughter of the late George Simon and Mary Alice Van Ells Simon and granddaughter of Franklin Simon, a world renowned retailer from 1900 to 1950s.
Betty was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who had many interests and achievements in her lifetime. She cared for her husband when he became terminally ill, and her family is convinced she added several years to his life. She was an expert knitter making sweaters, mittens and hats for her family and a proud baker who made the world's best chocolate, chocolate cake. Her coconut cake could not be equaled. She and her husband were lovers of fine antique furniture and she was extremely proud of her collection.
Betty was also a lover of cats, caring for as many as 30 in her lifetime, rescuing numerous from untimely deaths. She was predeceased by husband, Robert Severance, who died in 1991, a daughter, Carol Brandt, who died in 2012, a grandson Joshua Robert Esformes in 2010, and her brothers, George Simon and Franklin Simon.
Surviving are her children, Nancy Hummel, Susan Severance Esformes, Barbara Dulas, Amy Petee and Bob Severance; grandchildren, Steven Brandt, Kristen (Brandt) Griffen, Sarah Hummel, Margaret Hummel, Bob Hummel, Matthew Dulas, Michael Dulas, Jake Esformes, Mary Elizabeth Petee, Sean Petee and Jack Severance.
