Martha S. Lum

Martha S. Lum, 89, of Cincinnatus, passed away Friday. Martha, a coal miner's daughter, was born 2/22/1919, in Eldorado, IL to John and Bessie Stone and raised by her step-mother, Minnie after Bessie's death. Martha attended a business school in St. Louis MO and worked for Southwest Bell Telephone as a secretary until she joined the US Coast Guard in Sept. 16, 1943. She trained in the Coast Guard school for the SPARS and served as a Yeoman 2c in WWII, stationed in West Palm Beach and also Tampa, FL. Honorably discharged Nov. 30, 1945. She then married Warren Lum Dec. 12, 1945. She went with Warren to Boston while he was a student at Northeastern University.
Martha and Warren both worked at Crouse Hinds after moving to Syracuse. We bought a small house on Maurice Ave. and Donald was Born. We then moved to Memphis, NY where Richard and John were born. Martha and I joined the Memphis Baptist Church. We moved to Warners, where the boys all graduated from West Genesee where Martha worked as a secretary. All three sons graduated from college. Martha and I moved back to Cincinnatus after retiring and wintered in Vero Beach, FL enjoying fishing and friends. We had a good life of 63 years of Marriage, thanks to our Lord.
Martha is survived by her husband of 63 years, Warren; 3 sons, Donald (Beth), Richard (Tiz), John (Karen) Lum; 7 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren; sister in law, Lucille Stone; and many nieces and nephews.
Calling Hours will be Monday from 4-7 PM in the Memphis Baptist Church Annex and Tuesday from 10-11AM in the 1st Baptist Church of Cincinnatus. Funeral service will be Tuesday, 11am at the church in Cincinnatus. Burial will follow in the Pitcher Cemetery.
