Mario Gomes, Sr.

June 29, 1945 — July 7, 2016

On July 7, 2016, Mario R. Gomes passed away peacefully with his family by his side.

Mario was born to Jose and Auroa Gomes in Lisbon, Portugal in 1945. At the age of 14, Mario began work as a wood working apprentice to help his parents financially.

When he was 15 he met his girlfriend and future wife, Anabela Teles. They were married in 1969 and had two children, Estela and Mario. In 1966 Mario served in the Portuguese military seeing combat during the Portuguese Colonial Wars in Guinea-Bissau Africa.

After the war, Mario moved to the United States to work at Marcellus Casket. Mario continued to work in the woodworking industry for 56 years and became a master craftsman winning many awards for his craftsmanship. In his spare time he was in his garage building furniture. When Mario wasn't in his garage he was spending time with his grandchildren.

Mario is survived by his wife Anabela; children Estela Lawson, and her fiance Blaine Tewell Jr., Mario J. Gomes, and his wife, Rebecca; grandchildren, Cory and Anna Lawson, and Gabriel Gomes; mother Auroa Gomes; brothers, Fernando and Rogerio Gomes; many sister - and brother-in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mario was predeceased by his father, Jose.

Calling hours will be Tuesday, July 12th 4-7PM at New Comer Funeral Home, N. Syracuse.
