Margaret (Peg) Mary Hogg Briggs, born April 22, 1927, stepped beyond this life on December 14, 2022.
The daughter of an Irish immigrant, the youngest of six children, Peg proudly celebrated her heritage, often by being sharply dressed in green. Born in Fitchburg, MA, after high school graduation, Peg worked at nearby Fort Devens during WWII. She later became a credit manager with Sears, Roebuck where she met her future husband, Jack. They were married in 1952, and raised a growing family, primarily in Glens Falls, NY and then Cicero, NY from 1972 where they remained until Jack's death in 2014. They spent over 62 very happy years together.
A devout Catholic, Peg was a fixture at Cicero's Sacred Heart Church as a Eucharistic minister, a contributor to many parish events, and a fine vocalist with the choir. Her culinary skills were legion in the extended family and the wider community, from her time as a room mother for her children's elementary school classrooms, through the pancake breakfasts during Jack's flying days after his retirement from Sears. Her best recipes are treasured by those lucky enough to have them. Peg's extraordinary legacy of giving herself to others spanned her leadership in the Cub Scouts in the 1960s through helping seniors, (many of whom were younger than she was at the time) in the 2010s. She volunteered at public libraries in Cicero and North Syracuse, furthering a love of books and reading that continued well into her 90s.
An extraordinary model of motherhood, Peg is survived by her son Richard (Mary Sanderson) daughter Belinda (Glenn Shimamoto), son Lawrence (Lynn Craigue), son Michael (Sue Griffis), daughter Amanda (Joseph Drake), and son John (Cate Smith) as well as twelve grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
For the past five years she has lived in a memory care wing of The Heritage, whose wonderful staff and administration have provided remarkable support to Peg and to the immediate family. Her warmth, kindness, and grace endured even as her acuity ebbed with the advance of time. Her loving nature was felt by all who knew her, a fitting gift from a life well lived. She truly had the luck of the Irish with her.
Services will be at the Immaculate Conception Church, 400 Salt Springs Road, Fayetteville, NY at noon, on December 28, 2022. You can view a live stream of the service by
