Lyman L. Hale Jr., died on Monday, June 10, 2019.
Lyman was born in China in 1921 to missionaries Sadie and Rev. Lyman Hale. He attended Shanghai American School, followed by Syracuse University. After earning his MD, he served as an Army doctor in Japan and Korea during WWII.
During medical school, Lyman married Neva Marie Mowry and had a son, Lyman III (Terry), and daughters, Melleny and Martha. He worked in Alaska for two years on a government program to address the high incidence of tuberculosis. The family moved to Korea in 1958 where Lyman and Neva served as medical missionaries for 28 years.
Lyman and Neva retired to Syracuse in 1986. Lyman was predeceased by Neva and his sisters Helen, Mary, and Edna. He is survived by his three children, daughter-in-law (Patricia) and his grandsons Lyman IV (Lance) and Timothy.
Friends and family remember him as an incomparably humble, soft-spoken man with a serene and friendly demeanor. He enjoyed collecting stamps, reading books, and possessed a near-encyclopedic knowledge of birds.
Donations may be made in his name to the United Methodist Church of Fayetteville, End of Life Choices, Doctors Without Borders and Hospice of CNY.
