Louise Grace Moore
June 2, 2006
Louise Moore entered her Eternal Home on June 2, 2006 following a year of
recurring cancer with hospice care at home for six weeks.
She was born on Easter Sunday, April 5, 1931, in Auburn, the daughter of
William (deceased in 1967) and Leah (Anthonson) Moore (deceased May 28,
2006). Louise lived in Skaneateles Falls to age 12 when the family moved
to Eastwood. She graduated from Eastwood High School in 1949. After
working as a governess in Syracuse for a year, she attended Oswego State
Teachers College from 1950 to 1953 where she became involved with Inter
Varsity Christian Fellowship. During the summer of 1953 at a Billy
Graham Crusade in Syracuse, she decided to change "my" plans. She didn't
finish at Oswego, but went "off" to New Brunswick Bible Institute in
Canada, graduating in 1956. That is where she heard about Mary Slessor,
missionary to Africa 100 years ago, and felt God's call to Africa as a
missionary.
Louise taught her first Good News Clubs while at Bible School then took
Child Evangelism Fellowship training in Muskegan, Michigan, in 1957
followed by a missionary internship training in Detroit. She was
accepted as a missionary appointee with Child Evangelism Fellowship to go
to Belgian Congo in 1957. By 1958 she was in Belgium studying French for
one year and on to CEF of Central Africa in Burundi and Zaire. She
studied local languages - Swahili and Kirundi. She was involved in
teaching Bible to children, teacher training classes, school classes,
radio programs, seminars and pastor conferences.
In 1975, Louise moved to Nairobi, Kenya where a national committee was
set up. She helped initiate children's TV programs. A city-wide rally
reached 5,000 children. In 1980 she began new work with CEF in Mombasa
where she added teaching in Bible schools. In 1992 a CEF training center
was built to serve ten countries of East and Central Africa. She had a
booth at the fair reaching over 5,000 people one season.
When Louise returned to the States in 1997, she worked as a teacher
trainer and Good News Club teacher with CEF of Onondaga County and as
acollege representative for CEF in New York State. Louise loved pretty
things, her pet dogs, nature photography and traveling, and once wanted
to become a pilot. Her missionary stories would fill a book.
Surviving are a brother, Harold Moore of New Hampshire; and an aunt,
Elsie (Anthonson) Eckert of Baldwinsville, and many cousins. She loved
all people and will be missed by her many friends around the world.
Services will be held on Monday at 1 PM at the North Syracuse Baptist Church, Route 11, North Syracuse. Burial will follow in White Chapel Memory Gardens, Dewitt. Friends are invited to visit with the family on Sunday from 1-4 PM at New Comer Family Funeral Home, 705 North Main Street, North Syracuse.
