Leonard John Filipkowski Jr.

August 23, 1948 — November 20, 2020

Leonard John Filipkowski Jr., 72, of Liverpool, passed away November 20, 2020.

Leonard was born in Syracuse, NY on August 23, 1948 to the late Leonard and Mary Jean Filipkowski. He was a graduate of Sacred Heart High School in Syracuse and attended Onondaga Community College. Len served in the Air Force National Guard as a member of the 174th Tactical Fighter Wing in Syracuse. He retired from American Airlines with over 30 years of service. Len was an avid sports fan, and especially of Syracuse University athletics. His favorite months of the year were when he could watch or attend an SU game! Len also loved the outdoors; in his younger years he enjoyed camping, fishing, and golfing. He also had a passion for classic cars and regularly attended the Syracuse Nationals. Most importantly, he loved spending time with his family, and his most fond memories include attending his children's sporting events.

In addition, he often volunteered as a coach for Pop Warner football and Little League baseball. Growing up in a predominantly Polish neighborhood, Len was proud of his Polish heritage. His roots influenced the traditions of the holiday season, a time that he cherished with his family and friends.

Beside his parents, Len was preceded in death by his step-mother, Beverly Filipkowski, and step-sister, Deborah Marx.

He is survived by his son, Jeffrey (Christina Carbone) Filipkowski; daughter, Kelly (Nicholas Eldred) Filipkowski; sister, Kathleen (David) Spak; nephew, Kevin (Melissa) Spak; niece, Julia (David) Kaveney; and a blended family that includes Rick Salvetti and his children, Alise and Kylynn, and John (Gerri) Marx and their children, Christopher, Patrick, and Stephen.

Len has made a selfless and personal contribution to the Upstate Anatomical Gift Program. The family wishes to acknowledge the special care Len received at Upstate and VA Hospitals.

Per his wishes, there will be no calling hours. Services will be private.

Contributions in Len's memory may be made to the Syracuse VA Medical Center by mailing: VA Medical Center, Voluntary Services, 800 Irving Ave, Syracuse, NY 13210 or through their website:
