Leonard F. Grethel

Leonard F. Grethel, 87, of North Syracuse, passed away on Sunday, surrounded by his children and grandchildren, at the home of his daughter and caregiver, Nanci Grethel-Palumbo, of North Syracuse. Leonard was born to the late Joseph and Elizabeth Hockstuhl Grethel on May 16, 1922 in Syracuse. Leonard was a lifetime resident of the Syracuse area, living in Mattydale for 53 years before moving to North Syracuse to reside with his daughter, Nanci, upon the death of his beloved wife, Josephine, in Feb., 2006. Leonard was a devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather and great grandfather, who will be greatly missed by all. Leonard formerly worked for Porter Cable/ Rockwell International for 28 years, until their closing in 1978. In 1990, Leonard retired after 12 years of service from Cooper Crouse-Hinds. Leonard was predeceased by his son, David in Dec., 1982; son-in-law, Bernie Palumbo, in Jan., 2001 and his beloved wife of 59 years, Josephine, Feb., 2006.
Survivors include two daughters, Nanci Grethel-Palumbo of North Syracuse and Melanie (Martin) Piraino of St. Louis, MO; sons, Ronald (Darlene) of Brewerton, Lenny of Hastings, Garry (Kathy) of Cicero and Alan (Rick Marx) Grethel of Canandaigua; nine grandchildren, three great grandchildren and several nieces; and nephews.
Services will be Friday, 10 AM at St. Margaret's Church, Mattydale. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. Calling Hours will be Thursday from 4-7 PM at New Comer Funeral Home, 705 N. Main St., N. Syracuse.
