Judy Fukuko Fancher

March 18, 1929 — April 10, 2023

Judy Fukuko Fancher, 94, of Baldwinsville, NY passed away peacefully on April 10, 2023. Judy was born in the city of Hakodate on Hokkaido, the northernmost island in Japan, on March 18, 1929. She was the daughter of Kichiji and Chiyo (Ikari) Matsuhashi and second-youngest of 11 siblings including Mie, Kichiro, Teiko, Fujio, Naoko, Taeko, Takako, Shizuko, Kyoko, and Keiko.

Judy was a loving mother, wife, and friend and a talented cook and crafter who loved to paint, sew, and embroider. A devoted animal lover, Judy loved to watch and feed the neighborhood birds and squirrels and raised numerous cats, dogs, and other critters in her home. She opened her home and heart to all. Judy will be remembered for her quirky humor, her unique sense of style, and her endearing charm.

A USAF Veteran who served during the Korean War in Hokkaido, Robert met and fell in love with Fukuko, the movie theater ticket taker. She said his blond hair and hazel eyes overcame the fact that she could not speak English and he could not speak Japanese. Robert said she was the most beautiful flower he had ever seen. They married in Sapporo, Japan, and moved to upstate New York where Robert's family warmly welcomed her. Judy and Robert were previously members of the Community Christian Reform Church in Baldwinsville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert J. Fancher and many siblings in Japan; sister-in-law, Patricia Fancher; and brothers-in-law, Joseph Snell and Marvin Lane.

She is survived by her three children: James (Christine) Fancher of Syracuse, Mark Fancher of Baldwinsville, and Tonya Fancher of Davis, CA; her sister, Keiko Maekawa of Hokkaido, Japan; two sisters-in-law, Helen Snell and Harriet Lane of Fonda, NY and brother-in-law, George Fancher; and many nieces, nephews and cousins across the world.

Services will be held on Thursday April 20, 2023 at The Most Holy Rosary Parish at 111 Roberts Ave Syracuse, NY 13207 at 11:30AM. Calling hours will begin at 10:00AM. A reception will follow the services.
