Juanita Marie Treadwell, fondly known as "Neatsie" to her family and friends passed away peacefully on January 13, 2024 with her loved ones at her side at St. Joseph's Hospital in Syracuse, New York. Juanita was born on May 13, 1935, in Baltimore, Maryland to Bernard and Omega Jones. Juanita was the oldest of three children. She had a sister, Romaine Powell, (preceded her in death) and a brother, Benjamin Pope.
Juanita grew up on Long Island, New York. She grew up singing in the choir of Bethel A.M.E. Church in Bayshore. Juanita, Romaine, and their cousin Juanita Fowler were extremely close and shared a love for singing. As teenagers, the three girls formed a group known as the Singleton Trio and sang in churches throughout Long Island and New York City. They performed in the renowned Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem, where Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. served as its pastor. The young girls marched down the aisle singing "When the Saints Come Marching In", Juanita singing lead melody, Romaine, singing alto and her cousin, Juanita Fowler singing soprano. The Abyssinian Baptist Church was an important site for religious music during the Harlem Renaissance and remains a center for Harlem gospel tradition, social justice and community service today. Juanita had a beautiful voice and throughout her life, her love for singing and her beautiful and loving spirit brought smiles and a sense of joy to all who knew her.
Juanita attended Bayshore High School and graduated in 1954. While in high school, she met Henry Treadwell and they fell in love and became high school sweethearts. She worked during her high school years at an ice cream shop in Bay Shore. After graduating high school, she attended Allen University, a historically Black College/University in Columbia, South Carolina.
In 1957, Juanita married Henry, who had joined the Air Force. Juanita was a devoted and loving mother of five children and wife of over 50 years. Henry predeceased her in death in November 2016. While being a military spouse, Juanita traveled extensively, helping to move the family and household to various locations where they were stationed. They moved abroad to Lajes AFB, Azores, Portugal; Whiteman AFB, Missouri; Westover AFB, Massachusetts; and Torrejon AFB, Madrid, Spain.
While in Spain, Juanita and Henry always made time for travel and took the family on trips around Spain, camping on the beach in Valencia and Barcelona to visiting castles in Seville and museums in Madrid. Juanita and Henry also had a vibrant social life, having many friends, including U.S. ex-pat actors and entertainers who lived in Madrid, such as
Telly Savalas,
Hari Rhodes, and
Donna Hightower as well as Spanish celebrities. After five years, they moved to Travis AFB, in Fairfield, CA, which would be their last tour of duty.
Juanita worked outside the home at each place the family lived, working as an administrative assistant, while maintaining her family and household. She had an artistic eye and kept a beautiful home. Her children were always neat and well-dressed. She was hardworking, and loving. She was an excellent cook and always made dinner every night, after coming home from work for her family. Everyone was expected to be home for dinner and eat together. Her favorite holiday was Christmas and she loved to decorate the home and make Christmas cookies with the children. She established many family traditions, that are steeped within her children's families today.
Juanita was deeply engaged in her children's activities, leading the cheerleading squad for her sons' Little League Football team; having costumes made for her daughters' ballet recitals; attending and cheering for all of her sons' basketball and baseball games, helping her daughters with assignments for their girl scout badges and selling girl scout cookies; being involved with her daughters' band lessons and helping them with their trip to the Rose Bowl Parade and so many other activities while her children were growing up. She loved her children deeply and they loved her. She loved to laugh and always had a beautiful smile on her face.
Henry and Juanita lived in California after he retired from the Air Force. During this time, Juanita worked as an executive administrative assistant with Kaiser Steel Company. They then moved to Syracuse, NY to be closer to their New York family. While in Syracuse, Juanita work as a teacher's assistant.
Juanita was always a source of strength and love for her children as they started their own families and homes. She was a loving and caring mother and grandmother, full of warmth and joy, with a deep devotion to her grandchildren. She was God-loving and instilled this love in her family. She was deeply involved in church and was a member of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Bayshore, NY; Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Hampton VA, and was baptized at the age of 81 into the Church of Christ.
For their retirement years, Henry and Juanita moved to Newport News, Virginia. During this time, Juanita cared for her mother Omega, and was devoted to her until she passed peacefully at the age of 94, in 2012.
Juanita moved to North Carolina in 2013, where her daughter Kim and son-in -law, Scott lived. She moved into a senior citizen complex near Kim and Scott, who watched over and cared for Juanita for several years, where Juanita was very happy and began to develop a community of friends.
In 2017, she started experiencing the onset of dementia and moved to Syracuse in 2018 to live with her daughter Cathy and son-in-law, Michael. Cathy and Michael devoted themselves to caring for Juanita over the next five years during her illness where she lived out the rest of her life.
Juanita was a loving and devoted mother and gave birth to six children and has twelve grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Her six children are: Donna (Carlton) Lartigue, Henry "Butch Treadwell, Jr., (preceded in death), Gregory (Lisa) Treadwell, Cathy (Michael) Lobdell, Kimberly (Scott) Anderson, and Lynn Ann Marie Treadwell (stillborn). Her twelve grandchildren are: Cara (Joel) Plasencia, Lynn "Annie" Lobdell, Tiana Treadwell, David Anderson, Matthew Anderson, Ethan Lartigue, Roman Treadwell, Reena Treadwell, Sydney (Wil) Lartigue Fameni, Maurice Lobdell, Lavar (Brianne) Lobdell and Michael Lobdell. Her five great-grandchildren are: Sophia Plasencia, Leo Plasencia, Averielle Lobdell, Noah Lobdell, Madison Lobdell and Robert Fameni.
Juanita had several aunts and uncles who have preceded her in death and leaves behind loving nieces and nephews, Nicole (Ron) Pacaud, Christopher Powell and Michael Powell, and cousins Juanita Fowler, Morris Frazier Poole, Sr., Vera Poole-Ford, Vernice Carter, Goldie Stallworth and a host of family members and friends.
