Josephine C. Grethel, 78, of Mattydale passed away Tuesday at her daughter Nanci's home where she was residing after heart bypass surgery and a short battle with cancer. A life resident of the Syracuse area, Josephine was a member of St. Margaret's Church. Her loves included playing bingo, spending time with her grandchildren, gardening and reading. She is predeceased by a son David (1982) and a son-in-law Bernie Palumbo (2001).
Josephine is survived by her husband of 59 years Leonard, sons; Ronald (Darlene) of Cicero, Lenny of Central Square, Garry (Kathleen) of Cicero and Alan (Rick Marx) of Prattsburgh, her daughters; Nanci Grethel-Palumbo of North Syracuse and Melanie (Marty) Piraino of Cicero, a sister; Jean Vinciquerra of Syracuse, 9 Grandchildren and 1 Great Grandchild.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 10 AM in St. Margaret's Church, Mattydale where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery. Friends are invited to visit with the family on Friday from 4-8 PM at New Comer Family Funeral Home, 705 North Main Street, North Syracuse. Contributions may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place,
