Joseph S. Wilczynski, 75, of Dewitt and Alexandria Bay and formerly of Mexico, NY, died Dec. 16th. A master storyteller, he was known for making the short story long. An avid outdoorsman, he loved boating, fishing, hunting and riding his motorcycle. He belonged to several sports and environmental organizations, as well as the Oswego Elks Club and the Alex Bay American Legion.
After serving with the U.S. Air Force, Joe worked at DeLaval Separator Company in Poughkeepsie. He was then hired by Miller Brewing Company in Fulton, where he worked for almost 20 years as a facilities maintenance supervisor. When the plant closed, he became the director of facilities for Crouse Hospital. In 2002, Joe bought Hidaway Cottages in Alexandria Bay, where many of the guests soon became long-time friends. Being on the river was one of his greatest joys.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Carol Dwyer; his children, Scott Wilczynski of Williamston, MI, Tanya (Kevin) McCloskey of Lakeville, MA and Eric (Dawn) Wilczynski of Liverpool. He leaves a sister, Barbara (Larry) Demers of Raymond, NH along with a niece, and nephew. He will always be remembered by his grandchildren, Matthew Preston of San Jose, CA, Dominyc Wilczynski of Michigan and Jordan, Jamie and Jayden McCloskey of Massachussetts.
The family is grateful for all the support that has been provided by friends, new and old, over the three years he suffered with pancreatic cancer. On Joe's behalf, the family expresses thanks to Dr. Armand and Joan Cincotta, Drs. Joseph Augustine, Santo DiFino and Anita Pudusseri along with Bob Hudson, Robin Neider, Beth Connelly, Stephanie Wilcox, and all the HOA staff. We would also like to thank the staff at St. Joseph's Hospital on units 3-2 and 2-1. We are indebted to the staff at Hospice of CNY who cared for Joe during his final weeks with such compassion and skill.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Dec, 29th at 11am at Holy Cross Church, 4112 East Genesee St. in Dewitt. Friends can remember Joe by contributing to Hospice of CNY, 990 Seventh North Street, Liverpool, NY 13088, or a charity of their choice.
