Joseph Porto Sr., age 92, of Syracuse, NY, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 5, 2023.
He was born in Syracuse to Joseph and Josephine Tarravechia, September 8, 1930, a few minutes after his twin, Charles.
He was predeceased by his parents; four brothers: Richard, Charles, Samuel, and Claude; his wife Alice (née Lathrop); son James, and son-in-law, Peter Howe.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Susan; three children: Joanne Howe, Richard (Jennie Lee) Porto, Joseph Porto Jr.; four stepchildren: Lisa (Paul) Cummings, Jeff Phillips, Scott (Sonia) Phillips, and Amy Herholtz; ten grandchildren and ten step-grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and eight step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews, including his devoted niece Christine (Howard) Amody, who was like a daughter to him.
Joe was an Army veteran and served in Korea from 1949 to 1951. He worked for Chrysler at New Process Gear from 1951 to his retirement in 1987.
In 1956 he married Alice Lathrop, whom he lost to heart disease in 1985. In 1986 the Lord blessed him with his wife, Sue Phillips (née Phares). They were married for 37 years.
In his early forties, Joe heard the Gospel of Jesus Christ from Al Luckette, a co-worker on the assembly line at New Process Gear. He came to saving faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and became dedicated to sharing the joy of his faith with others. He taught Bible studies in his home for 40 years, and almost no one he talked to walked away without hearing the Gospel. He was a member of Lyncourt Wesleyan Church for almost 50 years, served on its Board of Trustees, taught Sunday School, and sang in the choir.
Joe was an avid tennis player and played weekly until he was 78. Known widely as "Uncle Joe," he mentored a generation of young tennis players, and was a founding member of the Tennis Association of Central New York.
He loved dogs, rescuing many over the years. Any animal in his care was well fed, well loved, got plenty of outdoor exercise, and truly a "lucky dog."
There will be a memorial service on Tuesday, March 14, 2023, at Messiah's Church Reformed Presbyterian, 8181 Stearns Rd, Clay. The family will receive visitors from 3-5 pm, and the service will be at 5 pm.
