Joseph E. "Joe" Kowalewski, 68, of Cicero, passed away at home on Thursday with family by his side. He was born on March 24, 1945 in Syracuse, son of Edward and Sheryl Kowalewski. He served in the US Army during Vietnam. Joe was a Syracuse Firefighter for over 25 years. In 1993 Joe was awarded the Francis Hendricks Medal. This is the highest honor that can be awarded to a Syracuse Firefighter.It is given for meritorious acts beyond the call of duty. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church.

Joe loved the outdoors including hunting, fishing and snowmobiling. His greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially his sons. He was predeceased by his sister, Paulette.

He is survived by his wife Joanne, 4 sons, David, Timothy, Christopher & Kyle, his sister, Karen Phillips, along with several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 1-4pm at New Comer Funeral Home, 705 N. Main St., North Syracuse. A mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday 9:30am at Sacred Heart Church, Cicero.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

A special thank you to Dr. Bingham, Bob and the nurses on 3-2 & 1-4 for their caring of Joe during his illness.
