Johnathan Brown

July 15, 1970 — April 21, 2021

On Wednesday, April 21, 2021, Johnathan Brown 50, of Syracuse, NY passed away with his loving family by his side. He transitioned peacefully to be with the Lord after a long battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), better known as Lou Gherig's disease. Jonathan's battle was one of great power, strength, indescribable love and absolute testimony.

Johnathan was born in Dillon, South Carolina. He moved to Syracuse at the tender age of two years old. Johnathan worked for the State of New York Upstate University Hospital for 23 years where he served as a Housekeeping Supervisor until he retired. He was a member of Abundant Life Christian Center, who wholeheartedly delighted in fishing at any chance he could get and simply loved spending time with family, most specifically his beautiful wife Yolanda of 25 plus years, and their children.

If you asked a hundred people who Johnathan Brown was, you would potentially receive a hundred different answers. Yet, the consistent response would be dedicated, kind and welcoming. Johnathan's dedication and devotion to his wife and children was more than just the traditional role of husband, father and grandfather. He took pride in being a provider, but truthfully loved every opportunity to share the responsibilities of cooking, cleaning, carpooling the kids to school, attending parent-teacher conferences, doctor's appointments and most of all the infamous family trips. He continued to remain actively involved in the education and everyday affairs of his children far after his physical body produced natural limits. He remained steadfast in ensuring that he would not succumb to being silenced by a disease that is known to take your voice but lived to remain engaged by any means necessary. A true inspiration.

Johnathan's kindness stood tall on the value of family his entire life. As a son, brother, uncle, cousin and friend he demonstrated a measure of unconditional love that can only be shared by those who understand the price for which it was given. He was a role model for so many, including his nieces and nephews, who looked to him for sound advice, non-judgment, comfort and consistency.

He was welcoming, selfless and truly enjoyed giving, especially to those in need. He had a love for young people and community that transcended the natural eye. This love was exemplified through his commitment to serving as a Pop Warner football coach, being an active neighborhood watchman, and much more. He had a sincere affinity for fixing things, mostly broken electronics. He was lovingly known in his neighborhood as "Mr. Brown the Helper" and was notorious for his ability to fix almost anything.

With an undeniably contagious smile that lit up every room and heartfelt laughter that would penetrate the deepness of your soul, Johnathan's eyes are now firmly and faithfully fixed on Jesus. His strong will and presence, along with his deep-rooted sense of family and friends will be greatly missed. Johnathan is survived by his wife of 25 years, Yolanda Clemons-Brown; three daughters, Asha A. Brown, Diarra A. Brown and Sarai J. Brown; two sons, Johnathan Brown II (Stephanie), Elijah Clemons; grandsons, Esrayel E. Flowers and Johnathan Brown III; parents, Dorothy Ann Brown and Richard Bethea; brother, Ray Charles Brown (Felicia) and an extended family whom he and his wife loved as their very own, Alexis Renee Winstead , Terryonna Steward, J'Syon Rivera (godson), Anthony Green (godson) and a dear friend he called brother Alonzo Zimmerman (Michelle). He leaves behind a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends whom he loved and loved him dearly. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Odis and Vera Mae Brown.
