John W. Root, 83, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2014 at Francis House with his family and friends by his side.
He was born in Pittsfield, MA where he graduated from high school. After four years in the US Navy, he worked for General Electric as a draftsman for 38 years in Pittsfield, San Jose, CA and Syracuse. Upon retirement, he was able to more fully enjoy his favorite sports activities (bowling, golf, skiing and watch Syracuse University and Chiefs sporting events). A long-term member of the Eastwood American Legion Post #1276, he served as a commander from 1986-87 and had many happy memories of events involving the Legion family. He was also an active member of the 40 and 8 and the Elks Club.
John was predeceased by his son, James Root.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Kay Root; a son, Jack Root; daughter-in-law, Kathleen Root; three grandchildren, Lindsay, Jaclyn and Michael and a great-grandson Preston Mitchell.
The family appreciates the care and compassion of staff members at CNY Dialysis, Crouse Hospital 6 North, and Francis House.
Calling hours will be 4-7 PM Thurs. at New Comer Funeral Home, N. Syracuse. Funeral Services will be 11AM Friday also at the funeral home. Burial will be at White Chapel Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Francis House.
