John E. Rutkowski

John E. Rutkowski 74, passed away peacefully at home with loved ones near. He was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA. He served in the U.S. Air Force as a Voice Interpreter Specialist after attending Syracuse University in the Russian Language Program. He was then sent to Japan for 17 months afterwards, stationed in Maryland with the National Security Agency. From there he went to the Florida Keys during the Cuban Crisis. He enjoyed sharing his stories of being a "Russian Spy."He worked for the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier and as an officer in the NACL for many years. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in various capacities with teaching, leadership, missionary work, and an "official" greeter. He also found great joy serving as a temple ordinance worker in the Palmyra NY Temple. He was predeceased by his parents, Stanley and Mary, a brother Thomas, and a great-granddaughter Aria.
Survivors include his loving wife of 55 years, Beverly; four children John Paul (Sondra), Joyce, Jodi (Robert) Crane, and Joel (Robyn); 7 Grandchildren Michael, Amanda, Tony, Thomas, Daniel, Olivia, Rose, and one great-grandson Bennett; a brother Frank; sisters Ruth (Michael) and Mary (Lester) and several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Utah State University Foundation, Aria Rutkowski Nursing Scholarship.
Calling Hours will be on Thursday 2-4 & 6-8pm at New Comer Funeral Home, 705 N. Main St. North Syracuse, NY 13212. Funeral Services will be on Friday 10 am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 4889 Bear Rd. Liverpool, NY 13088. Burial will follow at Assumption Cemetery.
