John E. "Bud" Beacham, 96, died Sunday at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Syracuse, where he had been a resident for several years. A combat-wounded World War II veteran, he enlisted in the Army in 1942 and served as a paratrooper with the famed 82nd Airborne in N. Africa and Italy, and took part in the successful Allied invasion of Sicily in 1943. In 1944 he was captured at Anzio, Italy and held as a prisoner of war for over a year; after his release in April 1945, he was awarded the Purple Heart and a number of other military medals of honor for service. He later worked at Syracuse University as an electrician, retiring in the late 1970s.

"Uncle Bud" to three generations, Beacham is survived by nephew John Spring, Sr. of Liverpool, with whose family he resided for many years; niece and nephew Kathleen and Charles Baker of Liverpool; and several great-nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by sister Madeline Spring of Baldwinsville and niece Kathleen (Stevens) Spring of Liverpool.

Graveside services with military honors will be 10:45am Thursday at Assumption Cemetery in Syracuse.
