John Doupe

John Doupe, 84, of LaFayette, passed away November 28, 2023.

John was born in Syracuse, New York on December 6, 1938 to Earl and Maybelle Doupe.

He is survived by his spouse of 61 years, Delphine Doupe; daughter, Cindy (John) Doupe-Kehrer; son, Earl (Janice) Doupe; four grandsons, Jason (Amanda) Burke, Scott (Katie) Burkey, Jacob Kehrer and Coleby Felber; two granddaughters, Nichole Fish and Josalee Lapp; eight great-grandchildren; brothers, Richard (Marcia) Doupe, Bradley (Debra) Doupe, and Bobby (Shirley) Doupe; and two sisters, Kathleen (Joseph) Doupe- Pistello and Nancy (Dan) Doupe-Pittsley.

John was preceded in death by his six brothers, Roger, Bruce, David, Mark, Michael and Billy Doupe.

John was a very kind and generous man. He enjoyed traveling, Sunday drives, building "stuff," his many projects and to do lists (EARL).

He loved his family beyond measure and would do whatever he could for them.

John and Delphine square danced for many years with a group of friends and even did some line dancing, John was quite good at it.

In his lifetime John owned 3 businesses, built 2 houses and tackled many restoration projects.

He owned 35 cars plus 10 classic and antique cars. He really enjoyed traveling south a couple times a year to buy and sell cars, especially the annual car convoys to Charlotte, N.C. with several friends. Sometimes as many as 30 cars were brought back to N.Y.

John was a member of the LaFayette Fire Department for many years and served as Fire Chief for several of those years.

He was heavily involved in the LaFayette Apple Festival and instrumental in keeping the grounds well-groomed and new buildings constructed.

John was a hard worker all his life. By the time he was 15, he already had worked at 5 jobs.

He had a varied job career. His field of expertise went from bus boy at the LaFayette Country Club at age 13, Mechanic at J.C. George, delivering fire trucks for Sanford Fire Apparatus from 1966-69, and owner of the the gas station in Jamesville. In 1969, he purchased the LaFayette Garage from J. Paul King. A repair garage was operated until 1995 when the garage was converted to Old Tymes Café currently owned and operated by daughter Cindy.

A celebration of life will be held December 10 at 2:00pm at the LaFayette Fire House Station 1 RT11, LaFayette, N.Y.

Hospice took excellent care of John and kept him safe as his health deteriorated.
